Re: the point about wrestling also penalising passivity, think the difference is that you can’t just stiff-arm people in wrestling and judo penalises certain *offensive* methods that would have dealt with it

A boxer knows that on the streets there are no rules. I have been training in boxing for over 2 years almost and I also know in street fights you will get kicked. But you can just take distance or go forward really fast to make their kick ineffective or you can just grab their foot with ur hands. You dont really need a martial art for that it's instinct.

Miss-leading title. You are both Akido-practitioners who are also experienced in other grappling martial-arts. It's not just the individual techniques that matters, it's also how you practice. If you often spar against non-compliant opponents you are going to get better, faster and stronger. If you don't spar you are going to suck in a match/real life scenario. Your balance, stance, reaction, control of emotions etc doesn't come from Akido but from the Wrestling training that you have done in the past. If you only trained the way Akido-dojos train you would have gotten your @ss whopped by a Judo-brown belt. I'm not trying to be mean, it's just the facts.

I get so nervous watching these martial arts rankings because so many martial arts enthusiasts would seriously put TaeKwonDo and Wing Chun on equal ranking with or higher than Muay Thai and Boxing. Im quite surprised at how low he ranked kickboxing. Kickboxing is easily a B at minimum going by his own words when describing other martial arts. Im guessing he’s thinking of old school kickboxing when a lot of karate guys were competing in it with a weird scoring system that required kicks.

Ranking Jeet Kune Do as a martial art makes no sense at all. Bruce Lee meant for it to be the philosophy of not being constrained to 1 style of fighting. Anybody who speaks of Jeet Kune Do as a martial art has been mislead.

Honesty your problem with Aikido is that you centered your focus at traditional Aikido which is less about fighting and more about spiritual coreography Aikido. If schools would stop teaching dance moves and do actual 1on1 Aikido could leave the past behind. People might not like it but Aikido could also be done offensive and more brutal which is not the spirit of the art for many

Another thing which caught my attention was Paul talking about wrestler, who also emphasize boxing. This reminds me of Ramsey Dewey, who talked about learning both grappling and striking, I think Ramsey was saying the situation could change from a striking situation to a grappling situation, or a grappling situation to a striking situation. So the situation in a fight is fluid

Something I rarely see demontrated against an experienced opponent in striking, kickng, elbows and grappling but with the additional skill of "Sticking-hands" (someone like Erik Paulson). How would the skilled striker do against another striker whose main game is to not let you have control of your hands and feet after initial contact is made?

With regards to the knife defence close to the end, practically, arming yourself with anything should be best response, broken planks, break the wall, break the door, furniture, take off your shirt steal the knife? But with the sports style rules, you could all possibly score best doing what the Japan guy did with Muhammad Ali, and lie or sit like a BJJ just keep kicking away. I didn't think the rules were fair, since you can't use lethal techniques against a lethal weapon. Yeah, why is everyone always empty handed. They can't beat skilled opponents with a weapon.

Part of the reason that aikido is rightfully considered a joke by contemporary effective martial arts is because aikido "masters" don't actually have any understanding of the attacks they purport to counter. This is just about as vivid an illustration of that point as I've ever seen. No level-changes; no grips, either on the body or the gi; no understanding of base, angles, momentum, or even the basic direction of the attacks. Even just from an introductory wrestling or judo standpoint, this is garbage.

Respectfully. I honestly think he judged Karate too harshly. I don't profess that it's the most effective martial art in the world, but placing it beside Capoeira and Tai Chi seems unfair. Many of the bread-and-butter basics of MMA fighting (eg. Front kick, side kick, roundhouse etc.) originate from Karate, and several UFC champions (McGregor and GSP) have a karate background. I think Karate fighters (particularly practitioners of Kyokushin, or athletes from Karate Combat) in most cases would defeat fighters practicing other arts in this F category. I therefore appeal for its promotion to at least the D category, although personally I would give it a solid C (because I love it).
